Analog physician scales use a mechanical balance beam to measure weight. They are reliable, do not require batteries, and offer precise measurements. Digital physician scales, on the other hand, display the weight electronically, often featuring additional functionalities like BMI calculation, weight tracking, and even height measurement.

Balance Beam Scales vs. Electronic Scales

  • Analog Scales: Ensure the balance beam is centered and not touching either side. Adjust the calibration dial (usually found at the base of the beam) to zero. Refer to the instruction manual for guidance on how to adjust it
  • Digital Scales: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Typically, this often involves using a certified weight that is about half the maximum capacity to calibrate.

Inconsistent readings can be caused by:

  • Uneven surface: Make sure the scale is placed on a flat, hard surface.
  • Calibration issues: Recalibrate your scale according to the user manual.
  • Battery problems (for digital scales): Replace low batteries, as low power can cause inaccurate readings.
  • Movement: Ensure the patient stands still and evenly distributes their weight.

Use a soft, damp cloth with a mild soap solution to clean your scale. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or submerging the scale in water. For digital scales, do not clean the display with harsh chemicals; instead, use a gentle glass cleaner or a microfiber cloth.

  • Make sure the patient is standing barefoot, with their back against the stadiometer and looking straight ahead.
  • Adjust the headpiece so that it rests on the top of the patient’s head.
  • The height measurement will be displayed either on the digital screen or marked on the stadiometer itself.
